Client Requirement
A global food automation integrator sought a fully sealed, corrosion-resistant gearbox for robotic arms operating in direct-contact zones of meat processing lines. The system needed to handle daily high-pressure washdowns, resist aggressive cleaning agents, and meet food-grade material certifications (FDA/NSF). In addition, it had to deliver precise motion control for delicate product handling, including slicing, sorting, and packing.
Key Requirements:
- Waterproof rating: IP69K
- External housing: 316L stainless steel
- Lubrication: Food-grade H1 grease, anti-drip formulation
- Torque: 50 Nm continuous, 100 Nm peak
- Sealing system: Double O-ring + labyrinth seal
- Surface finish: Ra < 0.8 μm to prevent bacterial adhesion
- Compliance: FDA CFR 21, EC 1935/2004
- Service life: 3+ years under daily CIP (clean-in-place)
Our Solution
We custom-developed a hygienic planetary reducer specifically for harsh washdown environments:
- Seamless stainless steel casing with no exposed bolts or gaps
- Shaft seal structure with redundant barriers to block ingress
- FDA-compliant synthetic grease with resistance to hydrolysis and degradation
- Internally vented pressure equalization system to prevent condensation
- Optional sensor integration for temperature and torque monitoring
Impact and Outcome
- Passed 1000+ hours of salt spray and alkaline detergent tests
- Maintains consistent motion accuracy ±0.05° after 1.2 million cycles
- Eliminated bacterial residue risk thanks to smooth, polished exterior
- Reduced unplanned maintenance by 35%, increasing production uptime
This gearbox is now in batch use across multiple automated poultry and bakery lines.
